Words we use

What deck, mark, spaced repetition, active student and other terms mean here.

The words the guides and the app use, and what they mean in Flash Reference.

Decks and cards

Word What it means
Deck A set of flashcards on one topic. Students study one deck at a time.
Card A question on the front and an answer on the back. Either side can be a picture.
Hint A short clue, up to 128 characters, that students can show on the front of a card.
Owner The instructor a deck belongs to.
Collaborator Another instructor the owner adds to help edit a deck. Needs a plan that includes collaborators.
Shared deck A deck made Public to your Organization, so every instructor in it can add the deck to their courses.
Folder A way to group your decks, for example one folder per course. Your folders are yours alone.
Preview Opening a deck from the card editor to see it as students do. Nothing in a preview is saved or counted.

Studying

Word What it means
Flip cards The usual way to study: read the front, then flip the card to check the answer.
Mark After flipping a card, a student marks it Know it or Still learning. Marks are what results are made of.
Round One pass through the cards. It ends with Round complete, showing how it went.
Multiple choice A study mode where students pick each card's answer from four options. A right answer counts as Know it.
Spaced repetition Bringing each card back just before a student would forget it. Cards they know come back after longer and longer gaps.
Review The study mode for spaced repetition: the cards that are due, plus a few new ones each day.
Due A card is due when spaced repetition says it's time to see it again.
Bookmark A student's way of saving a card to come back to. Instructors don't see bookmarks.

Results

Word What it means
Results A deck's page showing who's studying it, how they're doing, and which cards are hardest.
Known A card whose latest mark from a student is Know it.
Hardest cards The cards marked Still learning most often.
Active student A student who opened one of your organization's decks from your LMS, or from your website while logged in, in the last 90 days. Each counts once, however many decks they study.

Your organization

Word What it means
Organization Your school's or department's account. It holds your instructors, decks, LMS connection and plan.
Instructor Someone who builds decks, adds them to courses, and reads their results.
Admin Someone who sets up your organization: connects your LMS, invites people, and sees every deck's results.
Billing The role for choosing and paying for your plan. The person who signed up has it.
Student Someone who studies decks. Students don't have accounts: their course tells Flash Reference who they are.
Plan What your organization subscribes to. Plans differ in how many active students they include, and in features like collaborators and shared decks.

Connections

Word What it means
LMS Your learning management system, such as Canvas, Moodle, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Schoology.
LTI The standard LMSs use to connect tools like Flash Reference. It's why students don't need another account.
Launch Each time someone opens a deck from your LMS or website.
Consumer key and secret The pair of codes your LMS uses to connect to Flash Reference with LTI 1.1. They're in Settings.
Registration URL The address that connects an LMS with LTI 1.3 in one step. It's in Settings → LTI 1.3.
Shortcode The code that puts a deck on a WordPress page, such as [flashreference deck="…"].
Site secret A code your WordPress site uses to sign each launch, so logged-in visitors' progress is saved.
