Connecting your LMS

Canvas with LTI 1.3

Connect your institution's Canvas with LTI 1.3, by registration URL or with a developer key. Courses already connected keep working.

You'll need to be an admin in both Flash Reference and Canvas.

Courses that already use Flash Reference with a consumer key and secret keep working.

Connect with a registration URL

  1. In Flash Reference, open Settings → LTI 1.3 and copy the Registration URL.
  2. In Canvas, go to Admin, choose your account, then Developer Keys. Add a developer key and choose LTI Registration.
  3. Paste the registration URL and continue. Review what Canvas shows, then finish.
  4. When Flash Reference says it's connected, select Close.
  5. Turn the new developer key On.
  6. To make Flash Reference available to courses, go to Admin → Settings → Apps → View App Configurations, add an app By Client ID, and enter the developer key's client ID.

The registration URL works for a week, and a new one appears each time you open the tab.

Or create the developer key yourself

  1. In Flash Reference, open Settings → LTI 1.3 and copy the Configuration URL under Canvas developer key by URL.
  2. In Canvas Developer Keys, add an LTI Key. Choose Enter URL, paste the configuration URL, and enter https://flash-reference.com/lti/1p3 as the redirect URI. Save the key and turn it On.
  3. Back in Flash Reference, under Connect by hand, enter:
    • Issuer (platform ID): https://canvas.instructure.com
    • Client ID: the developer key's client ID
    • Deployment ID: leave blank
    • Authentication request URL: https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/authorize_redirect
    • Access token URL: https://sso.canvaslms.com/login/oauth2/token
    • Public keyset (JWKS) URL: https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/security/jwks
  4. Select Connect, then add the app to your account By Client ID, as above.

Adding decks to a course

Instructors add a deck from a module's Add Item → External Tool, or from the rich content editor's apps menu, and choose the deck in Flash Reference. See Adding a deck to your course.

If something looks different

These steps follow Canvas's own documentation, and menus can differ between versions and setups. If a screen doesn't match, contact us and we'll help.
